From your heart: You may want to read the blog on duas for further reading.

From the Sunnah: Our beloved Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم used to recite this dua to seek protection for his grandchildren, Hasan and Husayn رضي الله عنه.

My dear Ustadha, Allah be pleased with her and keep her steadfast, once told us about a beautiful tradition in Yemen. In extended families, when the elderly grandparents get too old to help with household tasks, their only responsibility becomes to recite Surah Al- Baqarah daily in the home. Until this moment, I only witnessed people turning to these verses on a daily basis, if they were affected by the evil eye or black magic. You may have heard the saying "prevention is better than the cure" this stands true for our spiritual wellbeing too.
Abu Mas’ud reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever recites the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah in the night, it is enough for him.”

Children imitate their experiences and often what they observe becomes their acceptance of normality. If as parents, we aren't aware of what they are exposed to because we aren't supervising them, we will never truly understand them, losing the ability to guide them.

As with all learning for children in the Early Years- good role modelling and patience is needed. We must teach with gentleness, love and kindness just like Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم modelled for us. If a child under 7 doesn't say "Bismillah" out loud before eating, instead of saying "What do we say?" in a harsh tone, make a habit of eating together and model saying it for yourself. Praise them when they remember. Reassure them that if we forget, we can say "Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirihi" and tell them the story of when this happened to a person who was in the company of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. This nurtures a love for Allah and His messenger, rather than putting pressure on innocent children who have the pen lifted from them.
Allah protect and guide us all. Allah allow our children to grow up to be righteous. Ameen.
